People always ask me how I come up with subjects to share with you each week. Sometimes, I get a direct request. “Why don’t you talk about what to do for a headache?” Usually, though, I leave it up to God. And without fail, He shows me what to talk about by presenting the same subject, in different ways, repeatedly during the week. I know it may sound crazy, but this is seriously how it happens.
So last week, our oldest son, Chris, called for his weekly check-in. He let us know that he had been working and dropped a manhole cover on his left hand. When he pulled his hand out of his glove, all the skin on his left middle finger had been ripped off. Thankfully, he thought better than to share it on the family feed! I, of course, asked him what he was doing for it. I was surprised and thrilled when he said, “I went to the ER and they did what they could, then I came home and spread honey all over it.”
HONEY? “Yes, Mom. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?” Well, YES, but how did you know that!? Encouragement to all the parents out there who don’t know if ANY of the stuff you’re pouring into your kiddos is getting through, IT IS!
After that, I saw a post come over my Facebook feed about local raw honey from someone in Crystal Falls! I immediately sent her a friend request and contacted her about buying some. You know me, if it’s local and fresh AND healthy, I buy it! She said that her family were fans of Telephone Time and they listened to my show every week! A real, live bona fide fan!
So, on Wednesday, I met this lovely young woman named Krystal Kudwa from Silver Wood Farms in Crystal Falls. HI GUYS! We spent a few minutes talking about bees and the challenges involved in raising them. She shared some wisdom with me, and I shared some info with her about the wonderful healing properties of raw, natural honey. I am thrilled to have a new local source for my honey!
Then I saw several posts this week about the benefits of honey, and voila! A show script was born! I don’t believe there are ANY coincidences in the life of a Christian, so this week, I’m going to speak about that delightful “nectar of the Gods” – HONEY!
OK, so what are the properties of honey, and what is it helpful for?

· Blood sugar regulation – it has a very low glycemic index
· Probiotic
· Healthy skin
· Rich in antioxidants – darker honey tends to have greater amounts
· Anti-bacterial - helpful for antibiotic- resistant bacteria
· Anti-fungal
· Soothes mucous membranes – You’ve all had honey and lemon for a cough
· Reduces ulcers
· Boosts memory
· Helps with allergies – make sure you are getting LOCAL honey. Bees only travel 5-8 miles from the hive, so honey from local hives is most beneficial for those plants and trees in your immediate vicinity
· Full of nutrients – vitamins B, C, and Zinc as well as calcium, magnesium, and potassium
· Heals burns
· Heals wounds
Additionally, honey is relaxing and can help you sleep. It is a wonderful alternative to sugar IN all your recipes! Herbalists don’t look at honey as a condiment, but rather as a food. Because it is so nutrient-rich, tastes good, and addresses a myriad of issues, it’s the perfect addition to your daily regimen to help keep you happy and healthy!
If you are going to use it therapeutically, always seek the advice of a health professional. Care needs to be taken with children younger than 12 months. There is a botulism that although rare, can have serious consequences, so be on the safe side and avoid it for infants. Also, those taking anti-coagulants or any medication used for blood clotting, should only use honey therapeutically with the advice of a qualified Health Practitioner.
You’ve all heard the saying that “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down”. Well, honey is natural medicine. So skip the sugar and take a spoonful of honey every day, and Let’s Get Better!
