YOU’LL FEEL IT IN YOUR GUT

Your gut is one of the best indicators of overall health.

When people come to me and ask, “How do you know when something’s right?” I have several responses, depending on the specific subject. But one comment I always add is: “You’ll fee it in your gut!”

Though there’s no scientific evidence relating physical feelings to an assurance of good choices, one situation where this advice is always applicable is our health. While we may experience other physical symptoms when something’s wrong, we all know by now that our gut health is critical to a strong, healthy constitution. It is the foundation of everything from immunity to brain function longevity.

Who hasn’t eaten something spicy, fat-filled or, God forbid, spoiled and had your gut let you know in a short amount of time, that probably wasn’t the best choice? Our gut is an excellent barometer of a healthy system. Imagine, no heartburn, no gas, no bloating or belching? Not stomach pain, no loose stools or constipation – EVER! It IS possible and I’m going to give you some tips today to help you get there!

vegetables are one of the best things to eat for gut health

First step – eating the right vegetables. Now before you all start whining like a bunch of toddlers, hear me out! Not all veggies are created equal. The best ones have 2 key characteristics. They are high in polyphenols, and they are bitter! These two things feed our gut microbiome, reduce inflammation and help sharpen our cognition.

Here are some of my favorites. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and arugula. These guys promote post-biotic production which regulates immunity. Show of hands. How many of you out there are suffering from one of the many auto-immune diseases? OK. Of those, how many of you are eating this group of veggies on a daily basis? Yes, I said DAILY. I don’t have to see you to know the results. Nuff said.

This group also helps the mitochondrial function, which helps convert the energy stored in food to usable energy for the cells. Anybody out there suffering from low energy or fatigue?  They are also rich in sulfur compounds which support the heart and circulatory system. Last but not least, they contain an enzyme called myrosinase, which enhances cancer fighting in the body. Always chop before cooking to activate this particular enzyme.

Next up, root veggies. I know lots of Yoopers eat these on a regular basis, but not all have the same beneficial nutrients. Radishes, onions, garlic, fennel and Jicama are low sugar options for those battling diabetes or trying to lose weight. Other choices are rutabagas, turnips, purple sweet potatoes and yams. Avoid eating too many cooked carrots and beets. They release excess sugars. Eat them raw instead.

Next, chicory and bitter greens. These are rich in inulin, which balances the gut biome. The bitterness tells you they are high in polyphenols, which contribute to longevity. Red chicory is one of the best choices because of the high level of antioxidants. Also, radicchio, endive, arugula and dandelion greens should all go into those fresh summer salads.

Substitute shiitake mushrooms for statins to control cholesterol

Lastly, shiitake mushrooms. They help lower cholesterol (instead of those dangerous statins), and support your gut health. Add them to stir frys and scrambles, or sauté them in some nice grass fed butter, and have them over your favorite steak!

A very old saying is, “You are what you eat.” If you aren’t happy with your present state of health or wellness, the first place to check is your diet. By adding some of these items to your diet every day, I promise , you’ll be on the road to a happier, healthier you! Focus on  your diet, eat natural foods and Let’s Get Better!
